1000: Seven gods in their treasure boat

The seven gods sail their boatload of treasure past an island complete with gnarled pine, plum blossom, and bamboo. They all have jovial expressions, except perhaps Benzaiten who looks as though she is concentrating on playing the lute.

White phoenix garden

1000: White phoenix garden

A pair of white birds display their filigree plumage, amidst flowers representing the four seasons. The bird name hakuhō can be translated as "white phoenix", but its origin is unclear, perhaps from an ancient Chinese mythical bird, but also an unofficial era name around the time of Emperor Kōtoku (c. 650 AD; see the Wikipedia article on era names).

Seven gods and the treasure tree

1000: Seven gods and the treasure tree

That lovable bunch, the seven gods, admire this shapely tree. Even its leaves and cones seem to be made of money, but written down the branches are all sorts of invocations, to fortune, friendship, marital harmony, and so on, all ending (in a pun) with the big character for "tree" (木) at the bottom. Auspicious cranes and red Mount Fuji complete the scene and ensure no boringly uniform areas.

Dream of fortune

1000: Dream of fortune

The treasure ship comes home, with its usual occupants, surrounded by all the right symbols: cranes, Mt. Fuji, hawk, pine, eggplant, and turtle. Most of the treasure is bundled up, but we see the red coral at the side of the boat. Daikokuten and Ebisu are enjoying a game of go, though curiously they have the stones placed in the squares (usually they go on the intersections).

Ebisu Daikoku seaweed fishing

1000: Ebisu Daikoku seaweed fishing

Ebisu and Daikoku are two of the "seven gods", Ebisu being responsible for fishing and trade, while Daikoku looks after agriculture. Here they are reaping seaweed, an important element of the Japanese diet, though this particular seaweed bears gold coins!

Takeuchi Hakuga

The artist was born in 1948, in Niigata. After working for a textile company, he went independent as a textile designer. He has his own individual drawing style, bringing a fresh approach to many traditional art themes.

He goes by his given name, Hakuga, in the traditional way, signing his paintings in a stylised, but non-cursive form.
