Summer - the great outdoors

Some aspects of Japan are so well known - the temples and gardens of Kyoto, the castles, the cherry blossom, Mt Fuji, and even the ugliness of urban sprawl. But one surely underrepresented feature is Japan's wild landscape. The visitor to Japan is often told how much smaller Japan is than foreign countries; this doesn't make much sense (given that the surface area of Japan is about 1.5 times that of the UK for example), until you realise that it must refer to the inhabitable area, outside which there is mountain scenery on a grand scale.

Kappa bridge, Japan Alps

This wooden suspension bridge is a landmark of the Kamikochi resort area in the Japan alps, and its span of some 30 metres carries hikers across Azusagawa river. Beyond can be seen some of Japan's most majestic mountains.

The bridge is named for the mythical water-creature, the kappa, which is said to live in deep clear waters such as these.

Laputa Road

Famous as a scenic spot said to be the inspiration for the Miyazaki animation Castle in the Sky (1986), this road winds precariously around the ridge. It was seriously damaged by storms in 2012 and 2014, and sadly is now closed, with no immediate plans for reopening.
