Update!
(15 August) The database should now be fixed, so there are no more stray funny characters... but there may still be glitches. I just discovered that all of the Peanuts puzzles had disappeared, because "artist=peanuts" was not matching "Peanuts"; so there is more to do in sorting out case-insensitive matching.
Database problem!
Apologies! A recent database upgrade has left lots of Japanese text corrupted, and also some variant characters, such as the e-acute in "Pokémon," not showing correctly. I am working to correct this but may take some days...

© Kimura Keigo Heaven and Earth - Red Fuji (Keigo)A classic composition: the deep red Fuji, surrounded by golden sky and mist... Born in Kyoto in 1944, Kimura Keigo spent a halcyon childhood collecting beetles in the hills to the east of the old capital. A love of nature brought the desire to paint - animals, trees, rocks, and the traditional subjects from dragons to waterfalls. Kimura is his family name, and as is usual with artists he uses his given name professionally, but does not appear to sign his paintings. This puzzle has smaller pieces than the standard size. Red Fuji (Hokusai)Properly known as "Mt. Fuji in clear weather," this is number two in the famous series of thirty-six views by Hokusai. The artist Katsushika Hokusai is best known for his series of 36 views of Mount Fuji, in the bold and simple style of the Ukiyo-e (or "floating world") style. He changed his name several times, so this is only the best-known of his brush names; as is the tradition, Hokusai is his given name (a fact that has plainly confused at least one art reference book). © Tatsuji Kajita Mt. Fuji horses (Kajita)White horses gather below Mt. Fuji at dawn to show off their strength. A traditional theme, yet in Kajita's unmistakably vivid style. Born in Nagoya in 1936, the artist became a successful illustrator of books, and commercial articles. In the late 1980s, he embarked on a second career, in oil painting, with which he has had many personal exhibitions. He paints a wide range of subjects, signing the more traditional pictures with the characters for his given name, Tatsuji, together with a seal, whereas on the illustration-style paintings of trains and sailing ships he signs "T. Kajita" in the western style. Permanently unavailable

© Tanimoto Ichirô The treasure ship (Tanimoto)The seven gods bring treasure, while showing off their distinct characters. The turtle and crane are the usual good luck figures, while some stylised pine trees and Mount Fuji complete the background. Born in 1951 in Kyoto, the artist Tanimoto Ichiro studied Japanese art, and has worked as a designer. He has held a number of exhibitions of kimono patterns, and although he paints traditional themes, his style is one of bold and direct characterisation, more reminiscent of textile design than brushwork. © Ogasawara Etsuko Cranes with red Fuji (Ogasawara)A very traditional composition: in front of an auspicious red Fuji, a pair of cranes symbolise fidelity, watched by a pair of turtles, emblems of longevity. The picture is completed by the trio of pine, bamboo, and plum blossom, or shô-chiku-bai (standard labels for the best three selections at a sushi restaurant). The style is an interesting blend of detail in the foreground features with an impressionistic setting of mist over the lake. Few biographical details are available, but Ogasawara has worked as a background artist for anime production, and specialises in animal portraits. Her acclaimed painting of a pair of white tigers has also featured on a jigsaw puzzle. She does not seem to sign her paintings; she writes her given name, Etsuko, with the old form of hiragana 'e', so it may also be rendered as 'Yetsuko'. Permanently unavailable

© Row. V. Ogasawara Fuji horses (Ogasawara)Two fine steeds gallop below Mount Fuji; Ogasawara's style is soft and flowing yet brings out the muscular strength of the pair. By tradition, we are told, a black horse symbolizes a prayer for rain, and a red horse a prayer for the sun. Few biographical details are available, but Ogasawara has worked as a background artist for anime production, and specialises in animal portraits. Recent works by this artist all bear the unexplained copyright declaration "Row. V. Ogasawara." Perhaps "Row" is a nickname, but the initial is a mystery, and on earlier puzzles "Row. E. Ogasawara" has also been seen. Permanently unavailable

After working for a textile company, he went independent as a textile designer. He has his own individual drawing style, bringing a fresh approach to many traditional art themes. © Sesson Akafuji (Sesson)A modern painting in the traditional style. The title simply means "red Fuji" - occasionally at dawn in late summer the whole mountain seen from the East can appear red, and this has been taken as a good omen. This picture is full of good-luck symbolism: a pair of faithful cranes augur domestic harmony, and the evergreen pines promise longevity.
The artist is not named, but the painting is signed 'Sesson', and it seems it may be the contemporary painter Noda Sesson. Unfortunately, I have not been able to confirm this. Conventionally, artists are known by their "given names", though the 'son' character in particular clearly indicates this as a "brush name." Permanently unavailable

© Hiroyuki Suwahara Dawn Fuji and hawk (Suwahara)Suwahara gives a vibrant touch to this classic composition - red Mt. Fuji at dawn, as a hawk soars over the sea of clouds. The hawk is an obvious symbol of strength, but is also associated with good fortune through another piece of wordplay. In Japanese, the same word, tobu, is used both for "leap" and "fly", so the hawk's high flight sounds like a "leap of progress" (to make a gross simplification). Born in Ibaraki, in 1969, Suwahara embarked on a career as a freeleance illustrator in 1996. He has specialised in historical figures, especially from the Three Kingdoms story, and brings a very modern technique to some traditional themes. Suwahara is his family name. Permanently unavailable

Watase Hasui (1883-1957) was one of the major artists involved in the revival of woodblock printing in the early twentieth century. He brings a fresh subtlety of expression to this traditional craft. Apart from a brief period in Shiobara, northern Tochigi, he appears to have lived his whole life in Tokyo, but specialised in landcapes, drawn from his travels across Japan. Permanently unavailable

All the usual symbols are present: plum, pine, and bamboo, gold, red coral, the turtle, and in the background more good fortune as two cranes are set against the Red Fuji in the distance. The artist was born in Toyama in 1970, and specialises in showy images, in his own reinterpretation of traditional Japanese themes. In 2000 he started to exhibit in the USA and now lives in New York State. Tanabe is his family name; he signs his paintings with his given name Zigen. Note that the usual Romanisation of this would be "Jigen", but it seems that Zigen is the artist's own preference. Permanently unavailable

© Beverly Red Fuji and cranes (Toko)A simple, but classic composition, with Mount Fuji in its auspicious colouring — occasionally at dawn in late summer the whole mountain seen from the East can appear red, and this has been taken as a good omen. In the foreground more good-luck symbolism: a pair of faithful cranes augur domestic harmony, and the evergreen pines promise longevity. This traditional artist's full name seems to be Mashima Tōkō (真島東紅), and he signs paintings with his given name Tōkō, which is surely a brush name, meaning "East crimson". © Hajime Okamoto Lucky treasure boat (Okamoto)A very traditional theme: the seven gods arrive in their lucky boat — the big character on the sail means "Treasure". As well as the red Mount Fuji in the background, there are many auspicious symbols waiting for them: the hawk and eggplant, the turtle, the pine, the plum blossom. Okamoto does all this in his inimitable jolly style, and has written a caption: Lucky, Happy, All smiles, Treasure boat (This is not standard Japanese, but Kansai dialect.) Born in Osaka in 1942, Hajime Okamoto is an artist with a distinctive and very jolly style, who specialises in cats — particularly the beckoning bringers of good fortune. As part of a cultural exchange programme, in 1986 he spent time in Jilin, north-east China, studying seal-making and calligraphy. He signs his paintings with a seal, and a stylised form of his name in Roman letters (with his family name last). Permanently unavailable

Fuji 36 views (Hokusai)The most famous of Hokusai's works, these are generally known (as the puzzle is titled) as "Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji." In fact, though, there were a total of 46 of these woodcuts, which are all shown on this puzzle. The artist Katsushika Hokusai is best known for his series of 36 views of Mount Fuji, in the bold and simple style of the Ukiyo-e (or "floating world") style. © Hokusai Fuji 36 views (Hokusai)The famous thirty-six views, complicated by the fact that apparently there are forty-six views in total. There seem to be many different collections, and no standard system of numbering: this set has the "Wave" (properly "In the Hollow of a Wave off the Coast at Kanagawa") as number 19, and does not include "Red Fuji" (properly "Mt. Fuji in clear weather"). The artist Katsushika Hokusai is best known for his series of 36 views of Mount Fuji, in the bold and simple style of the Ukiyo-e (or "floating world") style. We see the town bordering the long wiggly inlet of the sea, while Fuji towers in the distance. Note that the white border is part of the puzzle image. Born in 1922 in Tokyo, Yamashita had a troubled childhood: - after a bullying incident at school involving a knife, he was classified as mentally handicapped, and placed in an institution. His genius for creating harie (pasted paper pictures) was soon realised, though, and eventually he featured in many exhibitions across Japan. He remained an eccentric, though, and from 1940 to 1954 he wandered the country wearing only an undershirt (it is said), earning himself the moniker of "The naked artist wanderer". He died in 1971 at the early age of 49. His story has been dramatised a number of times, in the 1956 film known as "The naked general" and later television series. Permanently unavailable

Though the finished effect is beautiful, this will not be an easy puzzle—yet, the sky is full of gradation, so there are no completely uniform areas. Born in Kyoto in 1944, Kimura Keigo spent a halcyon childhood collecting beetles in the hills to the east of the old capital. A love of nature brought the desire to paint - animals, trees, rocks, and the traditional subjects from dragons to waterfalls. © Youseki Miki Year of the horse (Youseki)Nine jolly horses, some with riders, one from the nursery, gallop past Mount Fuji. There have to be nine, because this makes everything uma- (horse) ku (nine) iku (go), that is "go well". Born in Kyushu in 1966, Youseki Miki studied calligraphy, and after graduating from university embarked on a career as a commercial designer. He has developed a distinctive style of illustrated calligraphy with a contemporary, jovial touch. He writes his adopted brush name Youseki with nonstandard romanisation, to be read as the English word "you" plus "seki". (Miki is his family name, and his real name is Izuru.) © Katsushika Hokusai, 1829 Wave (Hokusai)The famous wave is number one in the famous series of views of Mt. Fuji. It is more properly known as "In the Hollow of a Wave off the Coast at Kanagawa." The waves not only dwarf the figures in the boats, but manage to make Fuji look tiny, seen only in the far distance.
