Although originally said to be based on a Buddhist monk called Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, this character has become a part of popular culture. As well as the red Mount Fuji in the background, there are many auspicious symbols waiting for them: the hawk and eggplant, the turtle, the pine, the plum blossom. Okamoto does all this in his inimitable jolly style, and has written a caption: Lucky, Happy, All smiles, Treasure boat (This is not standard Japanese, but Kansai dialect.)
