Update!

(15 August) The database should now be fixed, so there are no more stray funny characters... but there may still be glitches. I just discovered that all of the Peanuts puzzles had disappeared, because "artist=peanuts" was not matching "Peanuts"; so there is more to do in sorting out case-insensitive matching.

Database problem!

Apologies! A recent database upgrade has left lots of Japanese text corrupted, and also some variant characters, such as the e-acute in "Pokémon," not showing correctly. I am working to correct this but may take some days...

申し訳ありません 現在、データーベースの問題でほとんどのパズルの詳細などの日本語が文字化けになっています。修復するまで何日かかかるかも知れません。ご了承ください。

Lucky luck cats! (Okamoto)

A jovial collection of maneki neko, the cats that beckon good fortune — and presumably the more cats, the more fortune they can bring! Cats are a speciality of Okamoto's inimitable style, but they are also accompanied by a number of Daruma dolls and luck red snapper fish.

Born in Osaka in 1942, Hajime Okamoto is an artist with a distinctive and very jolly style, who specialises in cats — particularly the beckoning bringers of good fortune.

He signs his paintings with a seal, and a stylised form of his name in Roman letters (with his family name last).

Lucky Daruma

Lucky Daruma (Okamoto)

The popular good-luck doll, the Daruma, with lots of variations in typical Okamoto style, and a row of lucky cats (maneki-neko) for good measure. Although originally said to be based on a Buddhist monk called Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, this character has become a part of popular culture.

Cat luck! (Okamoto)

Okamoto's favourite subject: seven lucky cats, bearing (symbolic!) treasure, with Mount Fuji in the background, and sho-chiku-bai, the auspicious combination of pine, bamboo and plum.

The legend reads (in free translation): "Lots of laughter brings good fortune"

Lucky treasure boat

Lucky treasure boat (Okamoto)

A very traditional theme: the seven gods arrive in their lucky boat — the big character on the sail means "Treasure". As well as the red Mount Fuji in the background, there are many auspicious symbols waiting for them: the hawk and eggplant, the turtle, the pine, the plum blossom. Okamoto does all this in his inimitable jolly style, and has written a caption:

Lucky, Happy, All smiles, Treasure boat

(This is not standard Japanese, but Kansai dialect.)

Animal zodiac

Animal zodiac (Okamoto)

All twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac are here, but not in a neat row or circle, just each doing its own thing — from the sheep peacefully resting to the mice devouring a corn cob.
